Don't write off non digital media

Direct mail or non-digital media are sometimes written off as old fashioned and ineffective, but OgilvyOne shows that done well, it still has the ability to cut through and generate results.

The objective of the ‘Sally’s First Show’ campaign developed by OgilvyOne Melbourne was to increase donations by about 23% on the previous year, while mailing to a smaller audience.

Seeing a live performance can change the course of a child’s life and career. But if you live far away from a theatre – or you don’t have much money – it’s hard to get the opportunity to see a show.

To give as many Victorian primary and secondary students access to as many live performances as possible, Arts Centre Melbourne set up the First Call Fund. Since 2008, the First Call Fund has enabled over 15,000 Victorian students (and their 1520 teachers) to experience the performing arts at Arts Centre Melbourne, many for the first time. This inspiring program is funded through the generosity of donors.

Style guides - do you need them?

22/2/2013

A quick response to the fast company quote below.
Anyone who’s ever designed for a marketing agency has probably had to deal with a dreaded “style guide”–a Kafka-esque document laying out all the rules for what you can and can’t do, and how you should and shouldn’t do it. The soul-deadening power of these manuals goes double–they’re a creative straitjacket, and they’re horribly, horribly boring
Here is why you may need one and when you don't.
You need one if:
  • You have a large organistion with many offices scattered that are geographically separate from one another
  • You have admin and secretarial staff that like to get creative with Microsoft Word and Comic Sans
  • You have 10 years worth of logo variations on computers scattered throughout your organisation
  • Your not sure what colour your corporate identity uses

You don't need one if
  • You have one person who handles all of the business communication
  • You have one centralised location for all of your corporate collateral
  • You plan to stay with the same design/brand/advertising firm for the life of your business
  • You are a one man band
  • You don't care about consistency
  • You want to spend double the time recreating what should have been done right the first time

Sydney writer, designer and surfie, Ross Renwick died on Thursday 9 August 2012. He was 77.

For those that don't know, Ross and business partner Aaron Kaplan (d.2008) established the irreverent Billy Blue magazine in 1977. Running for 106 issues, the award winning publication was riddled with Ross' wordy wit and playful design.

In so many ways Dieter Rams had it right with his 10 Principles of Good Design… and this weather app based on those principles gets a lot of things right too. Designed in the light, purposeful style of Rams’ work for Braun, the app features just the information you need and provides it all on one intuitive screen. With the white iPhone shown here, the clean aesthetic of the design is just gorgeous
